Re-caning Services
Cane furniture panels will eventually need replacement. It is a labour-intensive process but can be a great investment. Antique cane panels can be completely rebuilt using a six- or seven-step process and then tinted to 'soften' the colour of the new materials
First step: appraisal
Firstly, we look at the existing weave and weight of cane. Some pieces, such as those on the left, are curved and need to be treated differently from flat panels

Photos are taken for reference and the panels are stripped to allow complete replace

When replacing a single panel it's important to mirror the design exactly
Second step: repair
Using the same gauges of cane and keeping the curve, the pattern is replicated through six stages of vertical, horizontal and diagonal weaves, to match the existing panels and to hold the curve

The first weaves are generally made in a thinner cane than the diagonals

You'll notice here that the new cane is a pale colour, very different from areas that have aged and developed a patina
Third step: secure and finish
Once the weaving is completed, the whole panel is secured and an edging cane is added if appropriate, then the work can be pigmented to look like the existing panels, as left, or you can keep it pale and allow it to age on its own
